Mommy Weight loss Series – Bridget Hales

Welcome to the first installment of my new Mommy Weight loss series!

Every week I will be interviewing a super mommy who will motivate, inspire and encourage you to lose the preggie weight and become fit and healthy. The most important lesson learnt along the way is self love and acceptance of your new body which brought the most beautiful little blessing into this world!

Today we are chatting to Bridget Hales from Hot Tea Travel and Thyme!

PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

My name is Bridget Hales and I’m 34. I worked as a teacher and a psychologist in Australia before relocating to the USA and starting a family. I am currently a stay-at-home-parent, and I started my travel/fitness/food blog  “Hot Tea Travel & Thyme” just over a year ago. My future goals include training as a yoga teacher and/or as a personal trainer. What I enjoy most is motivating and inspiring others to live their best life, and helping people to find balance in their lives.

HOW OLD IS YOUR LITTLE ONE?

My little one is 21 months old.

DID YOU HAVE A DIFFICULT/EASY PREGNANCY?

I had a very easy and healthy pregnancy. We traveled from the USA to Europe for five weeks during my second trimester, and to New York City as well. I was lucky enough to have no morning sickness and no complications during the pregnancy.

WERE YOU ACTIVE BEFORE YOUR PREGNANCY?

I was active before the pregnancy, mainly with walking and yoga, and also with some bike riding and strength training.

DID YOU STAY ACTIVE DURING PREGNANCY?

I stayed very active during the pregnancy, attending yoga classes up to four times a week and walking for an hour almost every day. I also tried aqua aerobics which I enjoyed.

HOW MUCH WEIGHT DID YOU GAIN?

I gained 14kg (31 pounds) during the pregnancy which was within the guidelines of 11-15kg that had been recommended for my individual circumstances.

HOW MUCH WEIGHT HAVE YOU LOST?

I lost all of the 14kg (31 pounds) I had gained, so I have now made it back to my pre-pregnancy weight.

WHAT POSITIVE THINGS DID YOU GAIN?

The positive things I gained through this process (apart from the obvious: having a baby to love and care for!) were that I had an increase in my motivation and inspiration when it came to exercise. I also gained confidence, strength, and stamina.

WHAT DID YOU DO TO LOSE THE PREGNANCY WEIGHT?

I returned to yoga and walking as soon as I could, and I took up running (mostly with a jogging stroller) when baby was 10 months old. I recently completed my first ever half marathon which was a major goal for me, and this goal helped with my motivation to run about three times per week. I also attended a Weight Lifting for Women course three times per week. I worked my way up to the half marathon by participating in several 5K races and a 10K desert trail run.

WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST MOTIVATION?

My biggest motivation was to have lots of energy for looking after my baby, and to generally be happy and healthy. One of the huge benefits of exercise is psychological health (and not just physical health), and exercise can be really important when it comes to improving our overall mental health and emotional state of mind.

WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

My biggest challenge by far was recovering from the surgery, as I underwent an emergency c section. The only other surgery I had ever been through prior to this was for wisdom teeth, and the c section was far worse than that! The first ten days after surgery were the hardest. However, the minute I could I started doing some very gentle exercise and I returned to yoga classes when baby was 6 weeks old. I would say it took a good 8-10 months for my body to feel “back to normal” and completely recovered from the surgery.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CHEAT MEAL?

My favorite cheat meal is probably mac’n’cheese or pizza. Can I only pick one? 😉

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR NEW BODY?

What I love most about my new body is that I am even stronger and fitter now than I was before my pregnancy, due mainly to the running and resistance training I have been doing. I also love that it was my body that helped bring my baby into the world! 🙂

Thank you Bridget for sharing your personal journey with us!
